Stay onthe Mohaka

Slow down and enjoy some time here on our farm. The nights are quiet and starlit, the birdsong in the morning is blissful. Accommodation options include a 2-bedroom cottage, and 2 studio chalets. Guests have full access to the nearby country lodge.
Fireside Cottage
Our new 2-bedroom cottage (45m²) has just been completed, as of 2 May, 2026.

Handmade by our team, using locally grown Hawke's Bay timber and the skillful know-how and labour of our friends from Heritage Timbercraft, who build their authentic mortise and tenon barn homes here on our farm.

The kitchen is well equipped with all the basics, but if you need anything else we're always happy to help. This is a settler's style kitchen with a butler sink for comfort and utility. Breakfast is included which typically includes fresh home baked bread, eggs, home made "Mohaka granola", plunger coffee, fresh milk, tea and plenty to snack on too. For the kitchen shelves we used Hawke's Bay Douglas-fir timber. Pottery (mugs, plates, bowls etc) by Zara Lattimore who also teaches pottery from her studio here on the farm.

Bedroom 1: Rest in pure comfort, get your circadian rhythm back in sync with the moon and the sun. Most mornings you'll wake to the sound of Bellbirds or Tui outside your windows. All new linen and nice things adorning the room thanks to Ash and Tammy who made the room as comfortable as can be.

Bedroom 2: Soft new linen with a light airy feel. For the bedside stools we used Hawke's Bay grown elm, handmade here. If you're not a timber buff, elm is just a beautiful timber, and hard to come by these days too largely due to Dutch elm disease.

Flooring throughout the cottage is Hawke's Bay elm. The rafters in the living space are made from Douglas-fir we've stained with teak. Reclaimed bricks surround the fireplace. Fire lit on a cool winter night, relaxing with a good book or conversation is nothing short of pure comfort and cosiness.

Outdoor barbecue area: We built the post and beam verandah with locally grown Douglas-fir using mortise and tenon joinery. Hawke's Bay grown Japanese Cedar makes up the cladding and decking. In the background to this shot is the lodge, about 100m by foot. The Weber barbecue is super easy to cook on - just turn on the gas, light it and you're away. The landscaping is underway - our vision is for the entire area to be alive with beautiful plants, flowers, bees and birds.

Nathan Macfarlane built the rocking chair when he was 14 from Hawke's Bay macrocarpa. Nathan, now 17, is immersed in the activities here on the farm. He is one of our up-and-coming fly fishing guides, works part-time in the yard for our timber framing company Heritage Timbercraft, and is to be found all around the property fixing things and helping out wherever he can. As a talented young carpenter this is a special chair he has gifted to the property that we are thrilled our guests can enjoy.

Be sure to use the lodge which is 100 metre walk away. Inside you'll find plenty of open spaces to relax and enjoy in.

The lodge pergola is great for outdoor dining, socialising and is open anytime to guests staying here.

"We had the most wonderful winter getaway at this farm. We stayed in a two person chalet and it was incredibly cozy, clean and comfortable. The heater worked perfectly so we stayed warm the whole time. The hospitality here is amazing and they are so generous with everything they provide. The breakfast was absolutely delicious. Peter and Tammy were so kind and helpful, and they were always ready to bring us anything we needed. The farm itself is beautiful, relaxing, and truly healing. The farm animals were very friendly, and we also loved the pottery class with Zara, who was so sweet and made the lesson really fun. We highly recommend this place!"

Studio Chalets

Our 2 studio chalets (20m² with sizable verandas) are a delight to stay in for couples, friends or solo travelers. Each has 2 standard single beds in them, which can be joined together or left apart.

The kitchenette is designed for comfortable short stays. Plunger coffee and tea, a mini oven for heating meals, kettle, toaster, mini fridge/freezer, glassware and more.

Bedding and bathroom

The chalet verandas are spacious and can comfortably accommodate 4 people for a game of cards or a conversation under the stars. It's a lovely place to read a book by candlelight.

Airy new linen and comfy pillows. On cooler nights the bedside chair is a great place to put your feet up and read a good book.

At the opposite end of the veranda is where the action happens. These little Weber barbecues couldn't be simpler - or better - for cooking up a storm. Bring your own ingredients and store it in the mini fridge inside, light the candle and enjoy a delicious home cooked barbecue dinner to the distant sound of the Mohaka River.
If you're planning to come and stay, be sure to book in an experience while you're here if you can. There are lots to choose from - from guided fishing and pottery, to all-new horse treks, crafts, knife making and log-to-home-tours. There are also lots of things you can on the property (free) and in your own time - from lovely walking tracks alongside the river and through native forest, to swimming and fishing on the riverbanks to simply reading a good book in perfect silence.

Good to know
The chalets and cottage are located in their own private area with easy access to the lodge, which is about a 50 metre walk. Guests have access to this which provides a large open, comfortable space for socialising, playing board games and being together.
To help maintain the quality and comfort of our cottage for all guests, our property is best suited to children aged 10 and over. We’ve carefully chosen new linen, furnishings, and décor to create a relaxing and well-kept space, and this age guideline helps us keep everything in excellent condition for future stays.
Expect to see a few friendly faces during the day as we have plenty of staff members going about their work, passing through. Your hosts (Pete, Tammy and their 3 kids) live nearby, just a few hundred metres up the hill. They are busy renovating their own home and taking guests on outdoor adventures but are always available to help should you need anything.
